Non-Toxic Workout Clothes: Honest Review by a Fitness Pro

As a Fitness Professional, I’ve been on the hunt for non-toxic workout clothes that check all the boxes: affordable, flattering (no front seam is a must and a glute seam is preferred!), not see-through, functional, truly non-toxic, and a company I want to support. With so many brands out there claiming to be sustainable and non-toxic, I wanted to put a few to the test. Here’s my honest review of three popular brands: Namarie, Pure Woven, and Allwear. I chose these because they were the only non-toxic brands I could find that offer leggings without a front seam. Side note: Ladies, if you are still wearing leggings with a front seam, there is a better way! But now that I have experienced no front seam, I can not go back!

Why Non-Toxic Workout Clothes Matter

Most conventional activewear is made with synthetic materials treated with harsh chemicals, including PFAS (forever chemicals), dyes, and flame retardants. Since we sweat in these clothes, our skin absorbs these toxins, which can disrupt hormones and impact overall health. Especially if we are going comando, as many people do. That’s why I decided to look for workout apparel brands that use non-toxic, sustainable materials, and are still cute!

Namarie

Material: Organic cotton and plant-based dyes
Price: $$
Transparency: Very clear about sourcing and materials.
Performance: Moderate compression, comfortable for everyday wear.
Flattering Fit: No front seam, glute contour.

My Thoughts on Namarie

Namarie is the first brand I tried when searching for non-toxic workout clothes. My first order included the Lainey Bra and the Classic Leggings. The leggings do not have a front seam and somewhat have a glute contour seam. My immediate issue: they are not squat proof! The bra is double layered and works fine for daily wear, but it is not supportive enough for a workout.

Fit and Functionality Review

Since then, I ordered the Kennady Bra and the Signature Leggings. The Kennady Bra is much better! It has adjustable straps, making it more supportive and functional for workouts. The Signature Leggings were ordered on preorder and took a very long time to arrive, but I am happy to say the wait was worth it! At this point, I had pretty low expectations of low-tox, workout clothes, and these leggings exceeded those expectations! I am typically in between sizes and decided to get the size up from my previous Namarie order due to the sheerness of the Classic Leggings. I will say the leggings are a bit baggy, so I did not need to size up, but I was pleasently surprised with them otherwise: no sheerness, no front seam, a deeper glute seem contour, and the fabric is very soft. Don’t expect glute separation with low-tox leggings, but these are most definitely the most flattering low-tox leggings I have found yet!

Is Namarie Worth It for Non-Toxic Workout Clothes?

Overall, Namarie is a solid choice for those looking for organic, skin-friendly workout wear that are decently flattering. The fabric is soft, breathable, and low-toxic, but not all of their products ideal for high-performance training due to the sheerness and low support. Compared to other non-toxic workout brands, Namarie offers cute(er) styles. However, if you’re used to more toxic material and brands like Buffbunny, the performance and style just won’t compare

Pure Woven

Material: Recycled bamboo and hemp blend
Price: $$$
Transparency: Uses OEKO-TEX certified dyes and ethical production.
Performance: Soft material, not much elasticity in fabric.
Flattering Fit: Has a front seam even though the photos on their website show no front seam.

My Thoughts on Pure Woven

I ordered the Bamboo Active Top and the Bamboo Active Leggings from Pure Woven. The fabric feels luxurious yet breathable, but the material does not have much elasticity. As a result, it stretches out as you wear it, making the top unsupportive for any workout activities. The top is cute, but I would not personally wear it to exercise in.

Despite the photos on their website showing leggings without a front seam, the pair I received did have one. Because of this, I did not even try the leggings on at first. I decided to return both items, but found it frustrating that they only offer store credit—especially considering these were the only two activewear pieces they offered at the time.

Would I Recommend Pure Woven?

Personally, Pure Woven workout clothes are not the right fit for me. If you’re okay with a front seam and don’t need a flattering glute seam or strong support for high-performance training, you might still enjoy the softness of their fabric. However, if you’re looking for non-toxic workout clothes that combine comfort with function, this might not be the best choice.

Pure Woven Customer Service Experience

Update: I communicated back and forth with Pure Woven after receiving leggings different from those pictured on their website. They offered to send me new leggings at no additional charge without needing to return the originals, but they confirmed they do not offer leggings without a front seam. Even after providing photo evidence of the misleading product images, they refused to issue a refund and maintained their store credit policy.

Unfortunately, this was not the customer service experience I had hoped for. I most likely will not purchase from Pure Woven again. I have received the new leggings they offered. They have the same style including the front seam. The material is better, but this style does not work for me and doesn’t stay up.

Allwear

Material: TENCEL and organic cotton blend
Price: $$
Transparency: Claims to be sustainable but lacks detailed sourcing info
Performance: Comfortable, but not great for high-sweat workouts
Flattering Fit: No front seam, but the seams above the butt are not flattering

My Thoughts on AllWear

I ordered the Bamboo Top 2.0 and the Bamboo Leggings. The top has adjustable straps, and you can either crisscross them or wear them straight. I appreciated that feature, but the material doesn’t have enough elasticity to provide strong support. As you wear it, the fabric stretches out, making it unsuitable for high-impact training. I’m wondering if this is the case with all non-toxic fabrics though.

I chose not to try on the leggings because as soon as I saw them, I knew they weren’t for me. The glute seam was not flattering, and the waistband was short with a seam at the top. While that waistband seam might make them more stable for high-impact movement, I personally don’t like the feel of a seam cutting across my waist.

Although I didn’t perform a squat test, the material felt thicker and more substantial than some other brands. Based on the fabric, I believe they would likely perform decently in a squat test. The softness and thickness are positives, especially when it comes to minimizing transparency during movement.

Overall, I think these pieces would be fine for lounging, walking, or low-impact activities, but they aren’t ideal for intense workouts. I had high hopes for switching to a non-toxic activewear brand, but unfortunately, the style just didn’t meet my expectations.

I did attempt to return the items, and although their return policy typically only offers store credit, they kindly made a one-time exception and issued a full refund. That level of customer service is much appreciated, and because of it, I would consider purchasing from them again in the future if they update their styles.

Final Verdict on non-toxic workout clothes

If you’re looking for an everyday low-toxic workout set that is still somewhat cute in style, Namarie is a solid choice, but you won’t want to be squatting in all their leggings. The AllWear and PureWoven tops were also decently cute for lounging in. For high-performance and more support for the girls, I would go with the Kennady Bra from Namarie (probably not the best option for girlies with big girlies though). If you’re looking for a trendy workout set, your best bet is the Signature Leggings and Kennady Bra from Namarie. As far as style and high-performance goes, I may be sticking with Buffbunny Collection, and add workout clothes to my 20% rule for toxic living. We can’t win them all!

The search for the perfect non-toxic workout clothes continues, but these three brands are great starting points! If you’ve found a non-toxic workout brand you love, let me know in the comments!
